Much like Willow Creek at the northeastern part of Humboldt County, Garberville and Redway have very warm weather and offer all the recreation that mountains, lakes and rivers have to offer.
The largest cities in Southern Humboldt, the sister communities of Garberville and Redway have around 2,000 residents each. When incorporating the populations of the entire region, the population is closer to 15,000. Southern Humboldt also includes the towns of Benbow, Shelter Cove, Whitethorn, Alderpoint, Briceland, Ettersburg and towns along the Avenue of the Giants: Phillipsville, Miranda, Myers Flat, Weott and Redcrest.
The Avenue of the Giants parallels U.S. Highway 101 for 32 miles between Garberville and Redcrest giving visitors a glimpse of the old-growth forests as they have been for thousands of years.
Tourists will find several highly rated Inns and campgrounds and state park camping facilities. Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Sinkyone Wilderness State Park, and the King Range National Conservation Area, which includes the Lost Coast Trail, are some of the places that visitors can see the most amazing snippets of the natural surroundings.
The warm climate makes for great outdoor recreation including hiking, biking, camping, river kayaking and golfing. The Southern Humboldt economic base is made up of tourism businesses, retailers, light industrial businesses, and agricultural products including organic produce and wine.
Several big entertainment events take place in the area during the year, including the Harley Davidson Redwood Run, Garberville Rodeo, a reggae festival, a Fourth of July celebration and other special events at sponsored by the Mateel Community Center.
